A few weeks ago in my grade 10 futures forum class we watched this Ted Talk about how, the presenter Sir Ken Robinson thinks that schools kill creativity. I am still undecided whether I agree with him or not, and here's why. First of all being in school right now I know that some people are extremely creative and others not so much however I believe that the uncreative people were less creative right from the start. If I wasn't creative in kindergarten, how do you expect me to be more creative now, is it the schools fault for "ruthlessly" taking the creativity out of me or is it just the way I am? There is no way of knowing. Secondly, I do agree with him in the aspect of schools taking the creativity out of us, for example if you ask a grade 10 student like myself and a kindergarten to draw a picture of a dog the grade 10 student would probably draw a brown dog, but the kindergartener could draw a green dog, a purple dog, or maybe a rainbow dog. But, is this an example of creativity or an example of knowing reality. This is where I do and don't agree, I believe schools are teaching us reality and preparing us for the future, and if this means changing our colourful dogs into brown ones then that's ok, it's reality. So does this mean we are losing creativity or gaining a sense of reality or both maybe, I have no idea. Please write a comment if you have time and tell me what you think about this "schools killing creativity' idea. Watch the Ted Talk if you'd like.
